Clean Up

Clean Up
Clean up is the last stage in the animation process before the drawings are coloured.

The clean-up artists will familiarise themselves with what’s happening in each scene, and will then begin drawing clean versions of the animators’ work. These are the final line drawings that will be seen on screen.

The clean-up person’s job is to take the animator’s work and enhance and improve it. This means they draw things more clearly, making sure the shapes in the drawings are clear and putting in all the fine detail that the animator would not normally do.

The clean-up artist must try and keep to the animators’ drawings while reinforcing what the animator is trying to get across, for example a look or expression that portrays a certain emotion.

Clean up is divided into two areas: key clean-up (often referred to simply as clean-up) and in-between.  The key clean-up artists (who are usually more experienced) do the main poses and then the in-betweeners do all the poses in between!  These scenes are also line-tested just like in the animation stage.
